The Tank file system, hosted on a Dell Isilon storage platform, provides robust and high-performance file storage for research and academic computing needs at the University of Chicago. To support data protection and recovery, the system uses snapshot backups as its primary mechanism for safeguarding files.

What Are Snapshots?

Snapshots are point-in-time copies of files and directories on the Tank system. They allow users to recover files that may have been accidentally deleted or overwritten. These backups are taken automatically and require no action on the part of the user.

Snapshot Retention Period

Snapshots on the Tank file system are retained for 30 days. This means:

• You can restore previous versions of your files from any snapshot taken within the last 30 days.
• After 30 days, snapshots expire automatically and are no longer recoverable.
• There is no archive or off-site backup maintained beyond this 30-day window.

Important Notes

• Once a snapshot expires, the associated data cannot be recovered by IT Services.
• Users are strongly encouraged to regularly review their files and restore data within the 30-day retention window if needed.

Need a Different Type of Backup?

The snapshot system is designed to support short-term recovery, not long-term archival or compliance needs. If your project or department requires:

• Longer-term backups
• Versioning beyond 30 days
• Offsite or redundant storage

Then it is your responsibility to arrange for supplemental backup solutions.
