Microsoft will no longer be providing support for Windows 10 by late 2025. In preparation, IT Services is working to upgrade all managed devices to Windows 11 by June 2025. We ask for your assistance in upgrading your device at your earliest convenience.
The upgrade will run similarly to a system update and may take 1-2 hours to complete. This varies based on many factors including your internet speed and device hardware.
Note: Before you begin, please check that you have a current backup of your current data. To do this, follow the steps under the Run Crash Plan Back Up section.
Run CrashPlan Backup
Ensure that your computer has been backed up before you start.
- Select the arrow pointing upwards to open the taskbar.

- Click the CrashPlan icon located in the taskbar.
- Look for a green checkmark that indicates your computer has been backed up recently.

- If you do not see a green checkmark, please contact IT Services Desktop Support at desktop-support@uchicago.edu for assistance.
- Once the backup is completed, you are now ready to begin the upgrade. Continue to the Install Windows 11 on your UChicago Managed Device section to complete the installation.
Install Windows 11 on your UChicago Managed Device
- Select the Start menu in the taskbar.
- Select on the Settings gear.

- Select Update & Security.

- Select Check for updates.

- A new Windows 11 category will appear.
- Click Download and install.

*If your device does not show the Windows 11 option, it may not meet system requirements for the upgrade. Please contact IT Services Desktop Support at desktop-support@uchicago.edu for assistance.
- The download process will run in the background for approximately 1-2 hours, and you can continue using your device while the download is in progress.
- Once the installation is complete, you will receive a prompt asking you to restart your device. Once you've closed all windows and saved any open documents, restart your device.
