IT Services Responsibilities
The University of Chicago IT Services Self-Managed Storage and Virtualization team is responsible for:
- Management of the hypervisor and storage
- Implementation of the product
- Providing the virtualization platform for the University
- Updates⁄upgrades to the hardware/hypervisor platform
- Responding to service requests
- Backups (IT Services 31 Day retention policy)
- Provision resources for campus partners
We work with the IT Services data center, storage and networking staff to provide the physical foundation of the virtual server hosting service.
Divisional IT Partners' Responsibilities
Customers of the Self-Managed Service are responsible for:
- Building, installing, patching, and upgrading guest operating systems
- System security and compliance from IT Services security
- DNS management
- Application administration
You are also the first line of support for the end users of the virtual machines and services running on them.
Roles and Permissions
Customers will have access to the virtual environment. IT partners will only have access to their department’s associated resource pool and virtual machines.

IT Services and Divisional IT Partners VMware Tools Responsibilities
VMware Tools is a utility that enhances the overall user experience and improves the management of the virtual environment.
Divisional IT Partners
The customer will be responsible for the installation and updating of the VMware Tools package in the guest OS. The tools package must be installed within 60 days of deployment or within 60 days of updating the virtual environment.
IT Services
After a virtual machine has VMware Tools 90 days out of date, the virtualization team is not responsible for any service disruptions that may occur to the virtual machines.
