Register a Tablet in Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

The University provides a security service known as Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). 2FA is designed to ensure that you, and only you, are using your CNetID (username) and password to access UChicago services, systems, and resources. 2FA requires that you provide both something you know (your CNetID and password) with something you have (a device, such as your phone, that you've set up in advance to use as verification). Then, when you are asked to authenticate, you provide your CNetID and password (first factor) and a verification using your phone, tablet, or security code that you enter (second factor).

Tip: You should enable two-factor, sometimes called multi-factor, authentication on non-UChicago systems like online banking, external email accounts, and social media accounts if it is offered. It adds a second layer of protection to your personal data while you use various online services.

Instructions to register your tablet are simple and provided below:

  1. Go to 2fa.uchicago.edu and click Go to Two-Factor.

If you already have devices registered, you will then be directed to the Manage Devices page. Here, you can see your registered devices. Click Register a Device on the left of your screen to register additional devices.

If you have not used 2FA before and have no active devices, you will be prompted to click Register a Device to continue.

  2. Select Tablet as your device type and then enter your operating system as well as a name for your system. This name can be simple if you wish, but you must enter a tablet name or you will not allowed to continue the registration process.

  3. Download the Duo Mobile app to your tablet. You can find the app for free in your device's app store. Next, ensure the app is installed and then open the app.
  4. Scan the Duo Activation Code
    1. Select the + button in the upper right corner of the app and press the Scan Barcode button. (Note: You are not required to have a special barcode reader on your tablet.)
    2. Hold your tablet up and scan the Barcode on the computer screen. Once you have scanned that code, the Success screen will appear on your computer. Your tablet will appear in your list of registered devices on your Manage Devices page.
