Send Email from On-Campus Servers

This article explains the process for sending email from servers on campus.

All on-campus servers should route their email through smtp.uchicago.edu. SMTP is a load-balanced service offered to all of campus for relaying email. Campus email servers offer SMTP (TCP port 25) and support STARTTLS options for encrypted email.

To use smtp.uchicago.edu, please send a request to IT Services with the IP addresses of the server or servers that will be sending email, then configure your mail server to send email via smtp.uchicago.edu (e.g., for postfix set "relayhost = smtp.uchicago.edu").

Servers must send emails from an approved uchicago.edu email domain. The Biological Science Division (BSD) and the UChicago Medical Center senders should use the BSD's mail routers at smtp.uchospitals.edu.

The sending IPs are rate-limited to 400 messages per hour. You can request an exception by sending a request to IT Services.
