Zoom Smart Recording

The Smart Recording with AI Companion feature uses Zoom’s generative artificial intelligence technology to organize host cloud recordings into highlights, smart chapters, and next steps.

Please note: currently, UChicago Medicine, Biological Sciences Division and student accounts are ineligible to use Smart Recordings unless they have received a prior exception from their privacy office.

To use Smart Recordings, the host must have cloud recording enabled. Once a meeting has concluded, the host will receive an email with a link to view the recording and transcript. Recording highlights, smart chapters, and next steps can be edited by the host.

Getting Started with Smart Recording

To enable or disable Smart Recording for your own use:

  1. Log in from your Zoom sign-in website.
  2. In the navigation menu, select Settings
  3. Select the Recording tab.
  4. Verify that the “Cloud recording” setting is enabled.
  5. Under “Advanced cloud recording settings,” select the check boxes next to Create audio transcript and Smart Recording
  6. (Optional) Select or clear any of the following check boxes as desired.
Note: If you clear all the check boxes, Smart Recording will be disabled.
Create recording highlights: Zoom will automatically highlight the most important parts of the recording. Hosts can adjust the highlights as needed and share the video summary with users.

Create next steps: Zoom will automatically summarize any actions to take after the recorded session. Hosts can edit the next steps manually.

Manage Cloud Recordings with Smart Recording

You can manage and edit the recording highlights, smart chapters, and next steps from the web portal.

  1. Log in from your Zoom sign-in website.
  2. In the navigation menu, select Recordings
  3. On the “Cloud Recordings” tab, select the name of the recorded meeting or webinar.
You will see a list of recording files.
  4. Select the thumbnail with the play icon.
The recording will open and the transcript text appears to the right of the video.

Recording Highlights

AI Companion will highlight the most important parts of the meeting. The host can manually adjust highlights as needed, save highlights as separate files, and cut unnecessary parts of the recording.

Smart Chapters
AI Companion will automatically group recordings into different sections with timestamps. Host and viewers can select a chapter to watch the part of the recording starting at that timestamp.

Next Steps
AI Companion will automatically examine the end of the recording and look for cues to identify any next steps. The host can edit the next steps or remove them as part of the recording summary.

Note: Zoom does not use any customer audio, video, chat, screen sharing, attachments, or other communications-like content (such as poll results, whiteboards, and reactions) to train Zoom’s or its third-party AI models.
