In certain scenarios, IT Services might ask you for your computer's assigned name in order to troubleshoot an issue, make software available to you for download and installation, or send updates to your computer for software managed by IT Services. Using the appropriate system, follow the steps below to find your computer's name.
Find the Computer's Name in Mac OS X
- Click the Apple Menu, located in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
- Select System Preferences.
- Click Sharing.
- Computer Name should be located at the top of the Sharing window.
Find the Computer's Name in Windows 10
To find your computer's name in Windows 10, follow the steps below, using either method.
Find the Computer's Name in Windows 10 Using the Search Box
- Click the Start menu
- Type computer name in the Type here to search box in the lower left.
- Select View your PC name in the results.
- Find your computer name to the right of the Device name row below Device Specifications.
Find the Computer's Name in Windows 10 Using the Settings Window
- Click the Start menu
- Click the Settings button.
- Click the System category in the Settings window.
- Select About from the menu.
Note: You may need to scroll down to find the About menu by hovering your mouse pointer over the visible menu options.
- Find your computer name to the right of the Device name row below Device Specifications.
Find the Computer's Name in Windows 11
To find your computer's name in Windows 11, follow the steps below, using either method.
Find the Computer's Name in Windows 11 Using Windows key (Windows Users Only)
- If you use Windows, you can hold down the Windows key and the Pause/Break key on your keyboard to quickly view your computer name, regardless of your device's operating system.
Find the Computer's Name in Windows 11 Using the Settings Window
- Click on the Search icon within your taskbar.
- Type Settings in the search bar.
- Click Open Settings.
- Select System settings if it is not selected automatically. The computer name will be listed within the System window.
Find the Computer's Name in Linux
- Open a terminal in Ubuntu by selecting Applications > Accessories > Terminal.
- Type hostname at the command line prompt to display your computer name on the next line.
